This proposed project will use an established land surface model – Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) along with NASA satellite data products and in-situ observations for water management decisions in the Lower Mekong River Basin. The specific tasks include using NASA satellite precipitation and vegetation as inputs to the SWAT model and use of satellite soil moisture and evapotranspiration for validation. We will also use the in-situ discharge measurements in the Lower Mekong River Basin for calibration and validation purposes. This proposal also connects closely with the Mekong SERVIR Hub and the ADPC. The ADPC already uses SWAT for decision-making activities. We will also provide various NASA satellite data products to the Mekong SERVIR Hub. These include precipitation, soil moisture, surface temperature, vegetation index, evapotranspiration and total water. Another important aspect of this proposal is the training and workforce development of scientists in the Lower Mekong River Basin. Training will include SWAT as well as use of NASA satellite products in decision-making for water resources.
