Summer 2021 Capacity Building Intern
Name: Philip Casey
School and Major: Master’s Student in Statistics, University of Maryland, College Park
How did you get interested in the program?
I started my master’s not really knowing what field I wanted to focus my applied statistics work. As I began to do more and more projects, I realized that I was always gravitating towards work that applied statistics to research in environmental and earth science. That’s how I came to find the CBP program and this internship
What’s your favorite part of the job so far?
My favorite part by far is getting to work with all the folks at NASA. The different experience everyone brings, from my fellow interns to the NASA civil servants, has really made this a unique and worthwhile experience. NASA has such a great culture of teaching and mentorship.
What are your goals?
After I finish my master’s program, I look forward to a career in science. In the short term, I’m looking for a research position that will allow me to build on the skills that I’ve gained through my program and through this internship.
What are your hobbies?
I enjoy reading, watching movies and spending time outside. I love exploring new areas through hiking and looking for wildlife. I grew up in East Tennessee and spent a lot of time hiking and backpacking. It’s something that I’ve tried to keep up as I move further and further up the east coast.
