COVID-19 Focused Hackathon - June 5-7
Indigenous communities are the focus of the Group on Earth Observations' (GEO) GEO COVID-19 Hackathon 2020 on June 5-7, 2020. The event is a crowdsourcing challenge for indigenous communities to design their own, culturally appropriate solutions to the pandemic. In advance of the event, GEO featured an interview with James Ratting Leaf Sr., a founding member of the GEO Indigenous Alliance.
A member of South Dakota's Rosebud Sioux tribe, Rattling Leaf Sr. wrote about what the world could learn from a Lakota worldview. "I think one overarching term that we use in our everyday life is Mitakuye Oyasin, it means that we are all related. It’s a unifying concept, unifying way of knowing or understanding our place in the universe."

GEO members from more than 100 countries and more than 100 participating organizations work to improve the availability, access and use of Earth observations for a sustainable planet. The director of NASA's Earth Applied Sciences Program, Lawrence Friedl, represents NASA in the United States GEO (USGEO).
