ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility

Overview

The Crew Earth Observations (CEO) Facility supports observations of the Earth surface, oceans, and atmosphere by ISS crew members using digital handheld cameras. Crew targets are identified by the CEO ops team at JSC using predicted ISS orbit ephemeris data, filtered by illumination conditions, predicted cloud cover, and crew time/ISS operational constraints. As the cameras used are handheld, the dataset includes a wide variety of nadir to oblique imagery; varying spatial resolution is also possible due to collection with a variety of focal length lenses (ranging from 24mm to 1150mm). As there is no embedded geolocation data in the camera frames, full georeferencing of selected images is performed by the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit team at JSC to produce a fileset package for each georeferenced frame. This package includes the fully georeferenced image, a per-pixel registration uncertainty image (both geotiff format), and a metadata text file.
