For a few minutes around 9 p.m. on January 3, 2017, Alaska’s Bogoslof volcano let loose an explosion. According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, cloud-top temperatures indicate the volcanic plume may have reached as high as 33,000 feet (10,000 meters) into the atmosphere. Winds out of the south carried the cloud north over the Bering Sea.

Satellites from NASA and NOAA have been tracking and analyzing powerful Hurricane Matthew since its birth just east of the Leeward Islands on Sept. 28. The GPM satellite captured this precipitation data from Hurricane Matthew on the morning of October 2nd, 2016, when Matthew was a Category 4 Hurricane immediately south of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Three typhoons have battered Taiwan in the past few weeks. Super Typhoon Meranti, the strongest typhoon of the year, caused havoc as it passed to the south of Taiwan on September 14, 2016. Typhoon Malakas clipped northeastern Taiwan a few days later. Typhoon Megi has now caused injuries, deaths and destruction as it passes over northeastern Taiwan.

In August 2016 an extremely severe rainfall event hit Louisiana and southern Mississippi when a very slow moving, low pressure system continuously pulled tropical moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.
