UPDATE 9/17/18:  Remnants of Hurricane Florence are now a post-tropical cyclone moving over the Mid-Atlantic states.  To date the storm has caused approximately 25 deaths.  Tens of thousands of homes in the Southeast, including the Carolinas have been damaged as floodwaters continue to rise, and numerous communities, including the City of Wilmington, NC are cut off by the floodwaters.  Search and rescue operations are continuing, and thousands of people remain in shelters.  NASA Scientists have begun to map the floodwaters by aircraft using Synthetic Aperture...

A 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit Japan’s northern-most island of Hokkaido on September 5, 2018. The earthquake's epicenter was near Tomakomai and occurred at a depth of 33.4 kilometers (20.8 mi.) The earthquake disrupted electrical service throughout Hokkaido, leaving 5.3 million residents without power. A volcano on Papua New Guinea’s Manam Island recently erupted sending around 2,000 of the Island’s 9,000 inhabitants to safer ground early Saturday morning.  The eruption began at 6am local time, sending an ash column more than 15km above sea level, according to the Rabaul Volcano Observatory (RVO).  Ash falls from the eruption were so dense that sunlight was blocked for hours and trees broke under their weight.  Although the current eruption appears to be over, a new vent indicated that further volcanic activities are expected.  No casualties have been reported.  ...

A hurricane warning is in effect for Hawaii’s Big Island, an Maui according to the National Weather Service as the threat of heavy rain flash flooding and high surf as Hurricane Lane heads toward the state.  The hurricane has weakened slightly to a Category 4 storm, but it remains a threat to the entire island chain.  Rain associated with the hurricane has started to show up on radar off the Big Island and offshore buoys were detecting higher and normal wave heights.  Tropical storm force winds are expected to begin as early as Wednesday evening on the Big Island. ...

Severe floods, which began in July 2018 have affected the south Indian state of Kerala due to unusually high rainfall during the monsoon season.  This has been the worst flooding in Kerala in nearly a century.  To date, over 483 people have died, and 14 are missing.  A least a million people have been evacuated from the area.  According to the Kerala government, one-sixth of the total population of the state have been directly affected by the floods and related impacts.  The Indian government has declared it a Level 3 Calamity, or “calamity of a severe nature”. Fast moving wildfires, including the Carr fire just outside of Redding, California have killed at least eight people, and destroyed more than 1,000 homes and businesses.  There are currently at least 18 active wildfires statewide which are being battled by thousands of firefighters.  The fires range from Redding in Northern California to Riverside County in Southern California.  They include two significant fires near Mendocino National Forest and Yuba City.  The Carr Fire is currently the largest in the state, having burned over 112,000 acres.  Heavy rains earlier...

LAOS Dam failure
A hydroelectric dam under construction in southeast Laos collapsed late Monday July 23rd  in the Attapeu province of Sanamxay district, releasing an estimated half billion cubic meters of water.  The collapse has left hundreds missing and an unknown number dead as water went gushing into six villages.  Approximately 6,600 people have been left homeless as the result of the flood.   The dam, which was under construction and not yet in operation collapsed after heavy monsoon rains in the area.    Resources:

On June 26, 2016 an increase in seismic activity near the Sierra Negra volcano within the Galapagos National Park was detected, indicating that an eruption was beginning.  An Orange Alert was issued, resulting in 50 people being evacuated from their homes in the area.  The Galapagos National Park Directorate (GNPD) has closed the site to visitors until further notice.  The GNPD is monitoring the Sierra Negra volcano, and two technitions from the park have been visiting the area surrounding the volcano daily to record the presence of new lava flows that are in the process of...

June 3rd, 2018: On Sunday June 3rd, Guatemala’s Fuego Volcano erupted violently and with little warning, sending ash nearly four miles into the air, and burying villages under an avalanche like pyroclastic flow of super heated ash and volcanic gasses.  At least 62 fatalities have been reported thus for, with hundreds more missing and injured.  The death toll is expected to climb, and the country’s disaster agency said that over 3,200 people had been evacuated.
